Our Story

Our Mission

Awaken Acres started in 2011 as a small homestead farm in Saline, MI located near Ann Arbor. It has evolved over time into a small nursery influenced by permaculture. Our goal is to offer useful plants, focusing on food forests and natural plantings. We're starting by selling herbaceous perennials, shrubs, trees with local pickup.

Farm FAQ

What is permaculture?
Permaculture is a sustainable design system that can help the environment, increase food production, and reduce the need for nonrenewable materials and energy.

What is a food forest?
A food forest, also known as a forest garden, is a diverse planting system designed to mimic the natural ecosystem of a forest. It involves planting various types of edible plants together in a way that maximizes their mutual benefits, promoting biodiversity and sustainability

What is your mission beyond selling plants?
Besides selling useful plants, my mission is to inspire people to improve their lives and the environment by working with nature instead of against it.

Why food forests?
Having a food forest is a sustainable way to ensure a steady source of food.

Why permaculture?
In permaculture, many different plants are grown together using natural methods. This improves soil health and removes the need for chemical pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers.

What is the future for the farm?
In the future, I would like the farm to support a diverse range of plants which would support a healthy ecosystem and provide those same plants to the public.
